The University of
Wales, which was founded by Royal
Charter in 1893, is a large and distinctive federal University
comprising eight member institutions and two University
Colleges
(University of Wales Institute-Cardiff, University of Wales
College-Newport).
The University of
Wales is the degree awarding
authority of its member institutions and for other higher education
institutions in the United Kingdom and overseas with which it also
enjoys close links. Annually, it awards more than 14,000 initial
degrees and 3,500 higher degrees, making it the second largest degree
awarding body in the United Kingdom .
Collaboration,
partnership and interdependence –
tempered by recognition of the extent of the respective autonomy of the
University and its members – are the essence of its Mission . The
University's broad strategic aim is to help create the conditions
whereby its members institutions, as well as its own central academic
units and services, achieve their full potential and maintain national
and international academic excellence.
In Wales , the
University is a major national
institution. It is committed to helping to fulfil the educational and
economic needs of Wales and to supporting its linguistic, cultural and
national heritage. Looking beyond its distinctive Welsh
responsibilities, the University is also committed to its international
role and to enhancing its standing across the UK and overseas. Due to
the wide range of Departments and courses offered, the University of
Wales provides opportunities equivalent to a big University with a
remarkably high academic level. Moreover, the University of Wales
cooperates with many educational organizational all over the world for
the provision of its programmes.
The University,
working through its Validation Board
and Unit, has established itself as one of the largest higher education
validation bodies in the United Kingdom . Currently, there are several
thousand students pursuing its qualifications in over fifty centres in
more than twenty countries. Degree and Diploma programmes are validated
following an extensive process of evaluation and all validated
programmes are subject to rigorous quality assurance mechanisms to
ensure that they are operating at the requisite academic level. For
validation institutions and their students, the granting of the
University's award guarantees the high academic standing and integrity
of a programme and confers an internationally recognised status.
The administrative
centre of the University of Wales
is the University Registry. It provides administrative services in
support of a wide range of federal activities on behalf of the member
and associated institutions and the University's Central Services. The
Registry is also the administrative base for the University's extensive
UK and overseas validating activities.
